Three Quick Ways to Reduce Holiday Stress

(1) Quick Qi Gong Abdomen Breathing

Often times, our breathing becomes very shallow as we rush to complete tasks and meet demands of our days.

This exercise will help you to mindfully deepen your breath and bring greater oxygen into the body.

Begin by sitting or standing quietly.

Place your hands, palms inward, over your abdomen.

As you exhale for a count of 9, contract your abdominal muscles as and if squeezing air out of the belly then the lungs.

Feel your hands sink inward as you contract your muscles while you exhale.

Imagine tension, worry, anxiety and stress leaving your body along with stale air as you continue to exhale.

Inhale deeply for a count of five and feel your abdomen expand like a balloon.

Imagine oxygen filling your lungs most fully and permeating every single cell in your body. Repeat several more times for five minutes.

(2) Self Acupressure

Massage arms at the acupressure points that are about 1-2 inches above your wrist towards your elbow.

These wrist points balance the emotions and relieve stress, and also help to relieve nausea.

Massage the inner ankles. These are source kidney points that help to revitalize vital energy.

Massage the knees by brushing along the inner knee caps, circling below the knee cap, and coming up the sides of the knees.

As you massage, breathe deeply and consciously let go of tension and any sense of fears as you exhale deeply.

Consciously, welcome in oxygen as you inhale.

(3)Take Some Down Time

Allow yourself permission to schedule a relaxing acupressure, session, a taiji, qi gong or yoga class, relax in the bath, visit a park or botanical gardens, or hike in nature.

Aromatherapy: Creating Abundant Health with Scent

RELAX

People often associate the scent of lavender with relaxation. Lavender contains proprieties that promotes relaxation. Yet, the cooling nature of lavendar is not most balanced in the winter time.

A more appropriate winter relaxation aromatherapy blend might include a touch of cinnamon and pine, along with lavender. Try diffusing these three essential oils together and watch your holiday guests smile warmly and relax.

Remember that that deeper woodsy scents such as cedar wood, sandalwood and ylang ylang are also very calming.

ENERGIZE

Top note scents such as the citrus oils like orange, lemon and other more pungent aromas like eucalyptus and rosemary are stimulating and energize the body. So try not to use these energizing scents near bed time or you may find it difficult to sleep.

DIFFUSERS

You can also purchase ceramic or glass diffusers that use tea candles. However, use this style of diffuser only for 15 minutes and do not leave them unattended, or that will create a fire hazard.

Also, you can diffuse fresh herbs in a pot of simmering water.

A wonderful blend can be created by using a spring of fresh rosemary, a spring of dried eucalyptus, one small stick of cinnamon and 1/8 cup of orange peel into a 3 cups of boiling water.

For winter colds, simply increase the amount of eucalyptus by adding 1/8 tsp of eucalyptus essential oil. Niaouli and myrtle oils can also be added to help loosen congestion and open the breathing passages.

Simmer for 45 minutes to create a healing scent.

Spiritual Prosperity: Everyday Meditation

The true art of meditating is integrating practices into everyday life so that you are empowered transform how you are moving through life.

Breath work is a meditative technique that can be performed at any time, while sitting in your car during traffic, walking around a grocery store, or playing with your children.

When we focus our minds on breathing, we free ourselves from mind-spinning or anxious thought patterns that keep us in states of stress.

Try the short count breath work with a focus on exhalations featured in this issue.

Three Minute Rejuvenation:

Take 1 minute to breathe with a focus on exhalation.

Take another minute to breathe with a focus on inhalations.

Then, take a final minute to breathe evenly, focusing on both inhalations and exhalations.

Positive thinking is another important meditative technique.

Begin noticing how many times during the day you think positive thoughts. How often are you thinking negative thoughts? At least once a day, take time to transform negative thoughts into positive thoughts.

For example, if the thought is, "I hate being stuck in traffic" you can choose to turn on some soothing music in your car and think, "I am empowered to engage this lesson in patience and to choose calmness and deep breathing."

Visualization is another technique you can engage in at any time to relieve stress and engage a more serene state of mind.

Take 1 minute to visualize a place of joy and happiness in your mind. It could be a pristine beach with soothing ocean waves or a memory of laughing joyously with a loved one whose smile lights your heart.

Over time, you train your mind to connect with positive thoughts and imagery such that even in the most challenging of situations, the mind will automatically create calmness instead of stress.

By actively using meditation techniques in everyday life, we reap the benefits and power of a mind that is focused, clear and serene no matter the external circumstances. It takes time, but is achievable for everyone one of us no matter how busy our lives are.
