Living with neuropathy can be challenging on both physical and emotional levels. Neuropathy is short for peripheral neuropathy, a condition that involves damage or imbalances to nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms may include but are not limited to:
Root causes vary as certain illnesses, injuries, exposure to toxins, certain types of infections can cause peripheral nerve damage. Often, the nerve damage is exacerbated by inflammation and stress.
Qi Gong can gently help those with neuropathy by reducing inflammation and gently increasing circulation to nerves in a way that does not usually aggravate nerve impulses. In addition, qi gong can be a valuable tool in helping one process the natural emotional responses that one might experience in response to the discomfort of neuropathy.
Unlike traditional western exercises, qi gong can be performed from a variety of postures and with different ranges of motion that specifically impact neurological impulses. For instance, if one is experiencing pain or discomfort in the feet, one can lie down to perform the movements and modify breath work to still gain benefit from the exercise. Similarly, the range of motion can be adjusted to accommodate the physical comfort zones of individuals such that one is not pushing through pain and aggravating nerve damage.
In addition, qi gong is a system of movement that has specific motions that target the release of specific emotions such as sadness/depression, anxiety, anger, or fears, any and all of which may naturally be a part of experience when dealing with the chronic nature of neuropathy.
A common question clients ask is, “How long before I see improvement?” Healing nerves is an individual process and depends on the root of what is causing the neuropathy, how long the condition has been present, and also the lifestyle of the individual in terms of stress, diet, exercise and use of other health and healing tools. Most clients see an improvement within 1-6 office visits when partaking of medical qi gong clinical sessions in combination with a home practice of qi gong movement, and modifying diet. Herbs may also be dispensed to help manage discomfort and increase circulation to the nerves gently.
You can begin a journey with the qi gong movements by using my free webinar for stress reduction. This webinar emphasizes the form of the Five Treasures which increases blood flow to neural pathways in a very specific way that is very nourishing to peripheral nerves and the internal organ systems that impact our nerves.
